She stood up, her wool coat draping perfectly over her shoulders. “We will take ten minutes,” Helen said, looking at Arthur.
Arthur looked uncomfortable, but he nodded. “Yes, a ten-minute recess is reasonable,” Arthur said. “Let us clear our heads.”
The board members began to rise from their chairs, their movements slow and heavy. Grant walked quickly to Vanessa’s side, whispering something in her ear as they headed toward the door.
Marcus stayed at the table, his hand resting on the blue folder. “Emma,” Marcus said quietly. “Do you want me to file the petition now?”
“Yes,” I said, though my heart was hammering against my ribs. “Do not wait.”
Helen did not leave the room with the others. She waited until the heavy oak door clicked shut behind Arthur and Lorna.
She stood by the window, her back to me, watching the rain slide down the pane.
“You think you are protecting your mother’s legacy, Emma,” Helen said without turning around. “But you don’t know the whole story.”
“I know enough to see what you and Grant have done,” I said.
