Callum turned his head slowly toward me.

His eyes were bloodshot, the dark circles under them looking almost purple under the hallway lights.

“You,” he said.

“The original terms set by your father required a co-trustee of sound moral standing,” I said. “With Arthur Vance’s ledger in the hands of the U.S. Attorney, the board had no choice.”

“That ledger is a forgery,” Callum said, though his voice lacked conviction.

“The federal forensic accountants do not think so,” Agent Harris said.

The agent took a step closer, his shoes squeaking slightly on the polished marble.

“We need you to step away from the executive offices, Mr. Prescott.”

“This is my building,” Callum said. “My father built this.”

“Your father built a shipping company,” Diane said, her voice dropping an octave. “You built a mountain of debt and falsified invoices.”

She looked at me, a brief, solemn nod passing between us.

“We are preparing the public announcement now,” Diane added. “The press release will state you are stepping down to focus on personal matters.”

“I am not stepping down,” Callum said.
