The gun skittered away, disappearing under a parked delivery van.

They struggled on the concrete, the grey exhaust fumes swirling around them.

“Evelyn!” Paul shouted, seeing me at the door. “Get Lauren out of here!”

I grabbed Lauren and ran toward the sedan, the engine still roaring.

The wind from the open garage door was freezing, blowing snow inside.

I pushed Lauren into the back seat and climbed in after her.

“Ethan!” I screamed through the open door.

He was on top of Vance now, his hands gripping Vance’s collar.

But Vance was fighting back, his fingers clawing at Ethan’s face.

From the entrance ramp, the sound of sirens began to echo, their red and blue lights flashing against the snow-covered walls of the street above.

The police were finally coming.

Vance heard the sirens too.

With a desperate heave, he kicked Ethan off him and scrambled toward his idling car.

He threw himself into the driver’s seat and slammed the door.

The tires spun on the wet concrete as he hit the gas, the SUV roaring up the exit ramp and disappearing into the snow.
