“Mr. Caldwell has substantial resources, and the court recognizes that the child’s welfare is best served by avoiding state custody,” Paul said. “We have also submitted a request for an expedited DNA test to amend the birth certificate.”
Ms. Vance looked from the paper to Ethan, then to me.
“The hospital requires a copy of this for our legal counsel,” she said.
“You may keep that copy,” Paul said. “I have already emailed a digital version to your risk management department.”
Ms. Vance stood silent for a moment, her fingers clutching the edges of the paper.
She looked toward the glass window of Mary’s room, where Dr. Rao was now writing on a clipboard.
“Very well,” Ms. Vance said softly. “The guards will stand down.”
She motioned to the two security guards, who nodded and walked back toward the elevators.
Ethan let out a long breath, his shoulders dropping an inch.
The hallway was suddenly very quiet, save for the hum of the vending machines around the corner.
