The heart monitor began to beep rapidly, the high-pitched tone filling the room.

The nurse rushed to my side, looking at the screen with a frown. “Her blood pressure is spiking. It’s way too high.”

“Tessa,” Naomi said quickly, leaning over me while ignoring Grant entirely. “We have a critical issue. We just discovered what he did before he left the house.”

My vision blurred around the edges, the bright fluorescent lights of the ceiling spinning.

“What did he do?” I whispered, clutching the bedsheet.

Naomi held up a document with a red urgent stamp.

“Grant didn’t just try to take the trust,” Naomi said, her voice urgent over the sound of the medical alarms. “He used your forged signature to secure an immediate cash loan against the Alexandria house, and the lenders are already processing the foreclosure.”

The monitor emitted a long, steady warning tone.

The doctor burst through the door, followed by two assistants.

“We need to get her to surgery immediately,” the doctor shouted. “Her pressure is in the red zone. Prepare the OR.”
