The Decorated Officer Who Reclaimed Her Family Inheritance and Protected Her Child
“Time for your evening check, Colonel,” she said with a warm smile.
“We need to make sure you’re ready for release tomorrow.”
“I’m ready,” I said, looking out into the darkening corridor.
Just beyond the nurse’s shoulder, I saw the reflection of the hallway lights on the polished floor.
And then, my phone lit up once more with an incoming email notification.
It was an email from Naomi.
Attached was an audio file and a PDF.
“Brielle just forwarded this to us,” Naomi had written in the body of the message. “It’s the leverage we need.”
I tapped the audio icon.
The voice of Everett, Grant’s business partner, came through my phone’s speaker.
“Grant, you’re losing your mind,” Everett said in the recording, his voice muffled by what sounded like car noise.
“The Langley trust is federal grade.”
“If you forge her name on those deed transfers, you’re going to prison.”
“Cut your losses and run before she realizes what you did.”
I closed my eyes, listening to the desperate edge in Everett’s voice.
The nurse finished wrapping the blood pressure cuff around my arm.
