“Yes, Sergeant,” I said, reverting to my military title out of habit.
“There is a man downstairs in the lobby,” she said.
“He says he is a process server.”
“He has legal papers that must be delivered to you personally.”
Naomi stepped forward instantly, her sharp legal instincts taking over.
“He shouldn’t be up here,” Naomi said.
“The hospital has strict security protocols, especially with the restraining order in place.”
“He is not on the floor,” the nurse said quickly.
“The front desk stopped him, but he says it is urgent legal business regarding the baby.”

“No,” Naomi said, holding up a hand.
“Let him deliver them. I want to see what they are trying to play.”
Vale nodded, his jaw tight.
“Bring the documents up,” Vale told the nurse.
“I will meet the server at the security desk and bring the papers myself.”
The nurse nodded and scurried away.
