The red dots of laser sights danced across Derek’s chest and the windshield of the van.

“Those papers are worthless,” Vincent said.

“I know who signed them, and I know how much you paid for the signature.”

Derek laughed, a harsh, dry sound that ended in a cough.

“It doesn’t matter what you know, Moretti,” Derek spat, taking a step forward.

“The system recognizes the seal on these documents.”

“The system is currently reviewing the bank accounts you used to bribe the clerk,” Vincent replied.

I could see the sweat glistening on Derek’s forehead under the harsh white light.

His hand shook slightly as he pointed the pistol toward Vincent.

“She belongs to me,” Derek growled, his eyes darting past Vincent to find me.

“Her father’s company belongs to me.”

“Your name is not on the registry,” I said, stepping out from behind Vincent despite Gianna’s protest.

The cold rain began to fall again, hitting my face and neck.

“My father never signed those papers over to you, Derek,” I said.

“You forged his signature on the probate documents.”

Derek’s face contorted with rage.
