A bright beam of white light cut through the darkness from above.

It swept across the gravel, searching for us.

“Who is controlling that?” Derek yelled, shielding his eyes.

“Vincent!”

The light stopped directly on Derek’s face, blinding him.

He cursed loudly and raised his arm to block the glare.

His grip on my shoulder slipped.

I pulled my arm back, hiding the steel tool against my side.

“Get me out of here,” Derek muttered to the guard.

“We are leaving.”

“But the documents,” the guard said.

“Forget them!” Derek yelled. “We are going now!”

He began to drag me toward the edge of the dock, where a black car was parked in the shadows.

My heart was pounding in my ears.

I knew if I got into that car, I would never come back.

I had to use the tool now.

I braced my feet against the wet gravel.

“Move, you useless bitch,” Derek hissed.

He yanked my arm, trying to force me forward.

I did not budge.

He turned his head to look at me, his face twisted in anger.
