Derek frowned, his grip loosening just slightly.

“What?” Derek asked.

“The keys are not with her,” Vincent said.

“They are with me.”

The silence fell over the warehouse again.

A cold wind rattled the high windows.

In Derek’s pocket, the phone began to glow once more.

The screen lit up with a text message.

I could see the preview of the message from where I stood.

It was a picture of a document.

At the bottom of the page, a thick crimson wax seal caught the light of the camera flash.

Derek saw it too, his gaze dropping to the screen.

His fingers began to tremble on the grip of the gun.

“Where did you get that?” Derek whispered.

Vincent took a slow, deliberate step forward, his eyes burning in the dim light.

“That is my business,” Vincent said.

“And if you want it, you have to let her go.”

Derek tightened his grip on me, but his eyes stayed glued to the glowing screen in his pocket.

The phone vibrated again, the screen shifting to a map with a pulsing green dot.
