The Crimson Seal and the Shadow of the Obsidian Lounge
“You actually came,” a voice said from the shadows.
Derek stepped into the light.
He looked exactly as I remembered, his blond hair perfectly styled, his gray suit immaculate.
But his eyes were cold and hollow.
“Where is my aunt, Derek?” I demanded, keeping my distance.
“She is safe for now,” he said, walking slowly toward me. “Depending on what you brought me.”
“I didn’t bring the physical drive,” I lied, keeping my voice firm. “But I have the decryption keys.”
“Of course you do,” he said, a cruel smile spreading across his face.
“If anything happens to me, or to her, the ledger goes to the federal prosecutors and to Vincent Moretti,” I said.
“You think you are so clever, Clara,” Derek said.
He stopped a few feet from me.
“But you always underestimate how much I know about your family.”
He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small black device.
“You think your father only left you that silly ledger about the rival syndicates?” he asked.
“What do you mean?” I asked, a cold dread pooling in my stomach.
