Liam lunged from the darkness of the landing, throwing his weight into Darrow’s back.

The iron bar clattered to the floor with a deafening metallic ring.

Both men went down in a heap, grunting and swearing in the dark.

“Liam!” I screamed, running out from behind the pillar.

The flashlight roll-played across the floor, casting wild, sweeping arcs of light across the damp walls.

Darrow was older, but he was heavy and desperate, clawing at Liam’s face.

Liam managed to pin Darrow’s arms, his knuckles white as he held the larger man down.

“Get the light, Audrey!” Liam gasped, his voice strained.

I scrambled across the floor, my hands scraping against the gritty concrete until my fingers closed around the cold metal of the flashlight.

I shone the beam directly into Darrow’s eyes.

He winced, turning his head away and spitting blood onto the floor.

“It is over, Darrow,” Liam said, his breathing heavy as he kept his knee pressed into Darrow’s chest.

From the dark corridor behind us, a sharp, piercing shriek cut through the air.

It was Beatrice.

“Keep away from me!” she screamed. “You ruined everything!”
