The Crimson Scars and the Ashes of a Family Betrayal
I stared at the base of the stairs, waiting for any sign of Liam.
“Audrey!” a voice whispered from the dark hallway behind us.
I turned my head quickly.
The voice hadn’t come from the stairs, and it didn’t sound like Liam or Officer Davis.
It was a weak, trembling voice.
“Audrey… help me…”
“Chloe?” I whispered.
Beatrice lifted her head from the floor, her eyes wide.
“Chloe!” she cried out, starting to scramble toward the back hallway.
“Beatrice, wait!” I warned, reaching out to grab her coat.
But she was already running, her high heels clicking loudly on the concrete.
She disappeared into the same dark corridor where Officer Davis had gone.
“Officer Davis!” I called out, but there was no response.
The low humming sound of the engine outside seemed to grow louder, vibrating through the floor.
I looked back at the stairs, torn between my husband upstairs and the voice in the dark.
Another sound came from the top of the stairs—a slow, dragging footstep.
Someone was coming down.
I shrank back into the shadow of the pillar, holding my breath.
