“We’re fine,” I said. “But Chloe is inside. And whoever has her just sent this.”
Liam handed his phone to Holt.
She took it, her face expressionless as she read the glowing screen.
“When did this arrive?” Holt asked.
“Two minutes ago,” Liam said. “Right after we heard footsteps upstairs and in the rear hallway.”
Holt handed the phone back to Liam and signaled to her officers.
“Check the stairwell,” she whispered to the first officer. “Keep your lights low.”
The officer nodded and slipped into the shadows toward the back of the hall.
Beatrice rushed toward Holt, her hands raised in a desperate gesture.
“You have to find her,” Beatrice pleaded. “My daughter has nothing to do with this. It’s Audrey she wants. It’s Audrey’s fault.”
Holt looked at Beatrice with a cold, professional detach.
“Mrs. Langford, you are currently a prime suspect in a major fraud and arson investigation,” Holt said. “I suggest you stay quiet and let us do our job.”
“A suspect?” Beatrice laughed, a harsh, dry sound. “I am a victim here! My daughter is missing!”
