“Chloe called me last week,” I said, not turning around. “Before the arrest. She was crying.”

Liam stood up and walked over to me, placing his hands on my shoulders. “What did she say?”

“She said she had kept something,” I whispered. “Something that proved Beatrice wasn’t acting alone.”

“A ledger?” Liam asked. “Documents?”

“She wouldn’t say over the phone,” I replied. “She was too terrified of Beatrice finding out. But she told me she kept it in her apartment.”

Liam was silent for a moment, his fingers tightening slightly on my shoulders.

“The apartment downtown,” he said.

“Yes,” I said, turning to face him. “The one Beatrice bought for her. Beatrice has a key, but so do I.”

Chloe had given me a spare set a year ago, back when we still tried to pretend we were a normal family.

“If Beatrice is out of jail, she’ll go there to clean out anything Chloe left behind,” Liam said.

“We have to get there first,” I said.

Liam looked toward the window, then back at me.

He knew the risks, but he also knew I would not let this go.
