He looked away quickly, unable to hold my gaze.
“I want the customs hold lifted,” Darrow said, throwing a manila folder onto the desk. “Now.”
Liam did not touch the folder.
“Explain the fundraiser three years ago,” Liam said. “Tell me about the service doors.”
Darrow swallowed hard, his collar suddenly looking too tight.
“It was a tragic accident,” Darrow whispered. “A faulty heater in the basement.”
“Do not lie to me,” Liam said, his voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. “I have the financial records showing Beatrice transferred fifty thousand dollars to your offshore account the day after the fire.”
Darrow shook his head, his hands trembling.
“That was for a real estate investment,” Darrow said.
Liam reached down and tapped his laptop screen.
“I am currently speaking with the port authority,” Liam said. “In five minutes, I will instruct them to permanently seize your entire fleet for safety violations.”
“You can’t do that,” Darrow gasped.
“Try me,” Liam said.
Darrow collapsed into one of the leather chairs opposite the desk, his strength leaving him.
He stared at the floor, his breathing shallow.
