“This is the proof,” I said, my voice trembling. “The payment was cleared on the very morning of the fire.”
Liam stared at the page, his thumb tracing the ink.
“We knew Darrow was involved, but this connects the money directly to Beatrice’s account,” he said.
“How do we use this?” I asked, looking up at him. “The police won’t arrest Beatrice on this alone.”
Liam closed the book and tucked it into his inner jacket pocket.
“We don’t go to the police yet,” he said.
“What do you mean?”
“Darrow is a businessman, Audrey,” Liam said, his voice cold and calculated. “He values his freedom and his assets.”
He stood up, offering me his hand to help me off the floor.
“My company holds the commercial leases on three of Darrow’s warehouses downtown,” Liam continued.
“You can evict him?” I asked.
“Worse,” Liam said. “I can call in his business loans. I bought his debt through a subsidiary last year.”
I looked at him, realizing the trap he had been quiet about preparing.
“If I squeeze his finances, Darrow will lose everything within forty-eight hours,” Liam said.
