“No, Dad,” Lucas said, his voice steady for a nine-year-old.
“I have the recordings of what you said in the library,” Lucas added.
“I have the tape of you telling Mom you would make her disappear like Grandma,” the boy said.
Daniel froze, his hand hovering in the air.
He looked at the small black device in his son’s hand, then at the federal agents.
“That is a toy,” Daniel said, trying to laugh, though the sound was hollow. “It is a child’s toy.”
One of the federal agents stepped between Daniel and my children.
“Mr. Carter, we have a warrant for your arrest,” the agent said.
The agent pulled a folded sheet of paper from his jacket.
“The charges include conspiracy to falsify medical records and illegal detention,” the agent stated.
“This is absurd,” Daniel said, looking around the lobby for his security guards.
But the two guards had already stepped back toward the glass doors, hands raised slightly.
“My family built this city,” Daniel said, his voice rising.
“Your family built a system of lies, Daniel,” I said, standing up straight.
