I fell to my knees on the wet concrete, catching both of them in my arms.
Mason buried his face in my neck, his small body trembling violently.
“I’ve got you,” I whispered, pressing my face into his wet hair. “I’ve got you both. It’s over.”
“He took Grandma,” Lucas whispered against my shoulder.
“I know,” I said. “We’re going to find her.”
Detective Miller marched up the stairs, his boots clanking against the metal.
He grabbed Daniel’s arms and pulled them behind his back.
The metallic click of the handcuffs was loud, a sharp sound that seemed to cut through the hum of the idling plane.
Daniel did not fight. He stood rigid, staring down at me with cold, venomous eyes.
“You think you’ve won, Emily?” he said as Miller led him down the stairs.
“She doesn’t have her medication. Without the clinic’s authorization, they won’t give it to her.”
He was led past us, his expensive leather shoes splashing mud onto my coat.
The officers guided him into the back of the lead SUV, slamming the door shut.
