The Crimson Ink That Exposed A Family Legacy Of Lies
My phone vibrated in my palm, the screen flashing with a local number I did not recognize.
I answered it immediately.
“Mom?”
The voice was small, muffled, and trembling.
“Lucas?” I said, pressing the phone hard against my ear. “Where are you?”
“We are in the back of the black SUV,” he whispered. “Dad took us.”
“Is Mason with you?” I asked.
“Yes,” Lucas said. “He is crying. Dad told him to shut up.”
A cold sweat broke out across my forehead.
The court had issued the temporary custody order just yesterday.
Daniel was not allowed within five hundred feet of the boys’ school.
“Why aren’t you in class, Lucas?” I asked, trying to keep my voice flat and calm.
“The principal’s assistant brought us to the office,” Lucas said. “Dad was there with two men in suits.”
“They said there was a family emergency.”
“I tried to tell the principal about the court paper,” Lucas said. “But Dad grabbed my arm.”
“Where is Daniel taking you?” I asked.
“He said we are going on a long vacation,” Lucas whispered. “He has our passports.”
