Outside, the grey city streets were filling with morning traffic.

“This is enough to trigger a federal investigation,” Charles said.

“It is enough to ruin Daniel,” I corrected. “And it is enough to keep my boys safe.”

Charles stood up and walked to his filing cabinet.

He unlocked it with a small silver key from his pocket.

He pulled out a thick blue binder labeled *Project Horizon*.

“This contains the internal audits,” Charles said, laying it on the desk.

“The ones Daniel told you to shred?” I asked.

“The ones I kept just in case,” he replied.

He pushed the binder toward me.

“Take it,” Charles said. “My lawyer will contact the district attorney within the hour.”

“Thank you, Charles,” I said, my voice barely a whisper.

“Don’t thank me yet,” he said. “Daniel is not a man who accepts defeat.”

I clutched the blue binder to my chest.

The cardboard was cold against my fingers.

“I need to get to the hospital,” I said. “My mother is still weak.”

“Keep your phone on,” Charles warned. “And keep your eyes on your sons.”
