“It is entirely relevant to the custody of a newborn baby, Mr. Henderson,” Helen said. “It goes to the father’s truthfulness and his capacity to care for a dependent.”

She looked back at Ryan.

“At 7:31 PM, eleven minutes before you left the house, you searched ‘postpartum bleeding how much is normal’ on your phone.”

The room went completely silent.

I looked at Ryan.

He was staring at the paper in Helen’s hand.

The color had drained from his face, leaving him looking suddenly hollow.

“At 7:35 PM,” Helen continued, her voice steady and merciless, “you searched ‘does blood ruin hardwood floors’.”

I felt a cold shock go through my chest.

I looked at Thomas.

His jaw was clamped so tight a muscle was twitching in his cheek.

“Why did you search those terms, Mr. Parker?” Helen asked.

Ryan swallowed.

He looked at his lawyer, but Henderson was looking down at his own legal pad.

“I… I don’t remember,” Ryan said.

“You don’t remember searching about postpartum bleeding and blood on hardwood floors five minutes before you left your wife alone?”

“It was a stressful night,” Ryan said.
