“This is evidence,” Miller said. “We’ll need to secure this.”

“Keep it safe,” Thomas said, standing up. “Our attorney is going to need every bit of it.”

“Who is your attorney, Mr. Parker?” Miller asked.

“Marcus Vance,” Thomas said.

The officer nodded, recognizing the name of the prominent family law attorney.

“We’ll make sure the chain of custody is logged properly,” Miller said. “If your husband knew his wife was in medical distress and deliberately concealed it before abandoning her, it changes the nature of this investigation.”

I looked at the bloody sheets, my mind flashing back to that morning.

I remembered the weight of the blanket, the cold sweat on my forehead, and the sound of Ryan’s suitcase wheels rolling across the hardwood floor.

I remembered crying out his name, my voice faint, and hearing the front door click shut.

“He saw it,” I whispered, staring at the stained cotton. “He had to have seen it. He changed the sheets himself.”

“We’ll prove it, Emma,” Thomas said gently. “Under oath, he won’t be able to hide from this.”
