“I’m recovering,” I said, my voice trembling.
“Are you?” Ryan asked. “A hysterectomy. Massive blood loss. Hallucinations.”
“I didn’t hallucinate,” I said, my heart rate monitor spiking.
“The charts say you were delirious when you arrived,” Ryan said. “My mother has already spoken to the chief of medicine about your mental state.”
“Get out of this room before I have security drag you out,” Thomas growled.
Ryan stepped back, raising his hands in a mock gesture of surrender.
“I’m going,” he said. “But I’ll be back with a court order.”
He turned on his heel and walked out, his expensive leather shoes clicking loudly down the corridor.
The nurse quickly shut the door behind him, letting out a long breath.
I let out a breath I didn’t realize I was holding, my shoulders sagging.
The monitor beside my bed beeped rapidly, the red numbers flashing.
“Breathe, Emma,” Laura said, taking my hand and rubbing her thumb over my knuckles. “Just breathe.”
Victoria pulled a chair up to the other side of my bed.
“We don’t have much time,” Victoria said. “He is going to act quickly.”
