“Emma?” Thomas asked, keeping his eyes on the snowy road ahead. “Is everything alright?”

“I can’t get into the checking account,” I said, my voice barely a whisper.

I opened my personal savings app, a small account I had kept from my college days.

That account was linked to the joint one for easy transfers.

The screen loaded, showing a balance of zero dollars.

Every single cent had been transferred out at four o’clock this morning.

“They took it,” I said, the coldness of the realization settling deep in my chest. “Ryan moved my personal savings. And he locked me out of the joint account.”

Thomas let out a long, slow breath that fogged up the corner of the windshield.

“He’s trying to cut off your air,” Thomas said.

He reached over and adjusted the truck’s heater dial, sending a fresh blast of warm air over my knees.

“I have fifty dollars in cash in my diaper bag,” I said, looking down at Ethan, who was sleeping peacefully in his car seat between us. “That’s all I have to my name right now.”
