If the company went under due to an environmental scandal, there would be no assets left for anyone to fight over.
“We need Nathan here,” I said.
“I called him thirty minutes ago,” Diane said. “He said he was on his way from the Bellevue office.”
“Call him again,” I said.
Before Diane could reach for her phone, the heavy glass door of the suite clicked open.
I heard footsteps on the hardwood corridor outside the conference room.
Nathan walked in, carrying a leather briefcase that looked as worn and tired as he did.
His coat was damp from the drizzle, and his hair was flat against his forehead.
He stopped in the doorway, looking at the three of us.
“You look like you’ve seen a ghost,” Nathan said, trying to smile.
The smile did not reach his eyes.
He set his briefcase on a chair and unbuttoned his coat.
“Sit down, Nathan,” Evelyn said.
Nathan looked at her, then at me.
His gaze fell on my phone, which still displayed the document.
He did not sit down.
