“They were,” Nathan said. “Until you used them to hide twelve million dollars of marital assets.”

Nathan looked at me, his eyes full of a quiet, weary regret.

“He transferred your initial investment funds out of the primary accounts, Claire,” Nathan said. “He routed them through three different shell companies registered in Delaware.”

“You have no proof of that,” Victor said, his voice rising an octave.

“I do,” Nathan said. “Because I’m the one who signed the authorization forms before I realized what you were actually doing.”

Nathan tapped the blue folder with his index finger.

“I gave the full trail to Evelyn Price this morning,” Nathan said. “She has the forensic audit team verifying the signatures right now.”

Victor took a step back, his heel hitting the leg of the visitor’s chair.

The metal chair scraped against the floor with a harsh shriek.

“You betrayed me,” Victor said, his eyes wild. “We built this company together, Nathan.”

“You stole from your wife, Victor,” Nathan said. “And you used our company’s infrastructure to do it.”
