The Cost of Seeking Shelter in the Shadow of a Syndicate Boss
The threat hung in the air, heavy and dangerous.
Damiano did not move, but I saw the muscles in his jaw twitch.
“You are forgetting your place,” Damiano said softly.
“I do not ask for your agreement.”
Silvio stood up straight, his face darkening.
“Times change, Damiano,” Silvio said.
“We will talk again when you have cleared your head.”
“But do not think we will stand by and watch you ruin everything we built.”
Silvio turned on his heel and walked out of the room.
The three captains followed him, leaving the heavy doors open behind them.
I let out the breath I had been holding.
“They are going to kill me,” I whispered.
“Or they are going to hand me over to Marcus.”
Damiano stood up and walked to the door, closing it firmly.
He locked it with a heavy brass key.
“They will try,” Damiano said, turning back to me.
He walked over to his desk drawer and opened it.
He pulled out a small, black radio receiver.
“But Silvio made a mistake,” Damiano said.
“He showed his hand too early.”
