“Any files she has are part of her work for my firm.”

“If you have a warrant, officer, please present it.”

“Otherwise, leave my property before I have my lawyers dismantle your careers.”

The officers looked at each other, then at Marcus.

Enzo, standing in the back, let out a low, amused whistle.

“A fiancée, Damiano?” Enzo said, stepping forward.

“This is a sudden development.”

“The council will be very interested to hear about this.”

“The council will be informed at the gala,” Damiano said, not looking at Enzo.

Marcus stared at me, his face twisting with pure hatred.

“You think this man can protect you, Arya?” Marcus sneered.

“You think you’re safe with a criminal?”

I forced myself to look him in the eye.

“I am exactly where I want to be, Marcus,” I said, my voice shaking only slightly.

Marcus took a step back, a dark, dangerous smile spreading across his face.

“We’ll see about that,” he whispered.

He turned to Enzo, sharing a brief, silent look.

Then Marcus turned back to the elevator.

“Let’s go, officers,” Marcus said. “We’ll let the happy couple enjoy their evening.”
