I listened closely, trying to catch the voice on the other end.

“They’re here, Mark,” Vale’s voice was thin and panicked through the speaker. “The police came to the clinic.”

“Did you lock the basement files?” Mark demanded.

“They had a warrant,” Vale said, his voice cracking. “They have everything. They know about the sedation reports.”

Mark’s face went completely pale.

“You fool,” Mark whispered. “You told me she was secure.”

“Your wife spoke to them, Mark,” Vale said. “Yasmin turned over the bank statements.”

Mark stared into the darkness of the living room, his mouth slightly open.

“Yasmin?” he repeated.

“She made a deal,” Vale said. “She’s trying to save herself and Gillian.”

The line went dead.

Mark slowly lowered the phone.

The blue light from the window cut across his eyes.

“She wouldn’t,” he muttered.

“She would,” I said. “Yasmin always looks out for Yasmin.”

He looked at me, a dangerous spark returning to his eyes.

“But she doesn’t have the codes to the primary ledger,” he said. “Abigail gave those to you.”

“I have them,” I said, holding his gaze. “And they’re going to the federal prosecutors.”
