I took a step back, my mind racing through the implications.

If we had Yasmin’s testimony about the institutionalization and Dr. Vale, and Gillian’s audio recordings of the assault, Mark would be finished.

He would spend the rest of his life behind bars.

“Where is Gillian now?” I asked.

“She’s at the motel near the highway,” Yasmin said.

“She’s hiding.”

“She won’t come out until I tell her it’s safe.”

“We need to get to her before Mark finds out she’s gone.”

Suddenly, a sound echoed from the front of the warehouse.

A low, heavy thud.

We both froze, our breath catching in our throats.

The rain continued to beat against the metal roof, but this sound was different.

It was the sound of a heavy metal door closing.

Yasmin gripped my arm, her fingernails digging through my wet coat into my skin.

“Did you hear that?” she whispered, her eyes wide with terror.

“Yes,” I breathed.

“Is there another way out of here?”

“The loading dock,” she whispered.

“But it’s locked from the outside with a heavy chain.”

I turned off my flashlight, plunging us into near-total darkness.
