The Cost of Inheritance and the Truth Behind a Family Legacy
The words hung in the damp air between us.
“What did you say?” I asked, wanting to make sure I heard her correctly.
“I will testify against him in court,” she repeated.
“I will tell the district attorney everything.”
“I will hand over these documents, and I will testify about the bribes to Dr. Vale.”
“I will explain exactly how they planned to have you permanently institutionalized.”
“But I want a deal.”
“I want immunity from prosecution.”
“You have to make Ana promise that the DA will drop the conspiracy charges against me.”
I looked at the leather bag in her hands, knowing the truth was locked inside it.
“I can’t make that promise for Ana,” I said. “She’s an estate attorney, not the prosecutor.”
“She has influence,” Yasmin snapped, her panic rising.
“She knows the district attorney personally.”
“If I don’t get immunity, I will take these papers and I will disappear.”
“And you will be left at Mark’s mercy.”
“He will find you, Alana.”
“Without these papers, it’s just your word against a certified psychiatrist.”
