I looked at Scott’s face.
The arrogance was gone, replaced by a dull, blank stare.
“You wanted to leave me with nothing,” I said to him.
“Avery, please,” Scott whispered.
“You spent our savings on weekend trips with her,” I said, gesturing to Kayla.
Kayla looked away, her face flushing red.
“You used my salary to pay for the roof on your house,” I said.
“I can pay you back,” Scott said. “Once the trust clears, I will write you a check.”
“The trust will not be clearing for you, Scott,” Jerome said.
Jerome turned to Victoria, who was still reading the document from the yellow envelope.
“Victoria,” Jerome said. “As the executor, you have a fiduciary duty to enforce the terms.”
Victoria closed the folder.
She looked at Scott with a mixture of pity and disgust.
“The moral clause is unambiguous,” Victoria said.
“Victoria, come on,” Scott pleaded. “She’s my grandmother. She loved me.”
“She loved the family name,” Victoria said. “And she despised dishonesty.”
Victoria looked down at the secondary clause printed on the last page of the will.
