“Then call him,” she said, her voice rising slightly. “But do it fast. Scott thinks I’m at a doctor’s appointment right now.”

I pulled out my phone and dialed Jerome’s office number.

His assistant put me straight through.

“Avery,” Jerome said. “Did you speak to her?”

“I’m sitting across from her right now,” I said. “She has a thumb drive with two years of messages, emails, and bank details.”

“What are her terms?” Jerome asked.

“Ten percent of the recovered assets, and immunity from the fraud suit,” I said.

There was a long silence on the line.

I could hear the faint sound of Jerome tapping his pen against his desk.

“Tell her we accept the terms in principle,” Jerome said. “But she must hand over the drive today, and she must sign a formal cooperation agreement at my office tomorrow.”

“Will you draft it?” I asked.

“I will draft it immediately,” Jerome said. “Tell her if she plays straight with us, we will protect her from Scott’s legal fallout.”

I looked at Kayla.
