My thumb hovered over the glass screen of my phone, my breath catching in my throat.
He had planned this long before his grandmother even fell ill.
The sheer calculation of it made my stomach turn.
My phone buzzed again, vibrating against my palm.
*Do we have a deal or not?* Kayla texted.
I took a deep breath, trying to steady my racing heart.
I typed back a brief message.
*What kind of deal?*
She replied almost instantly.
*Not over text. Meet me at the diner on 4th Street in twenty minutes. Come alone.*
I looked out the window.
The rain had finally started to fall, streaking the glass with thin, cold lines of water.
I stood up, grabbed my trench coat from the back of my chair, and slipped my phone into my pocket.
