The Cost of Gold and Blood in the Shadow of Rome
“Mr. Moretti,” I said, my voice steady despite the shaking of my hands. “My name is Emily Carter.”
A deep, gravelly voice answered me in accented English.
“You should not have this number, signorina.”
“I have the Swiss encryption keys,” I said, leaning forward in the seat. “And I want to make a deal.”
The silence on the line stretched for several seconds.
“Where are you?” Moretti asked.
Before I could answer, a second call began waiting on my screen.
The caller ID showed Matteo’s phone number.
My thumb hovered over the screen, my heart stopping as the phone vibrated against my wet palm.
I swiped left, rejecting Matteo’s call, and brought the phone back to my ear.
“I am still here, Mr. Moretti,” I said.
“The Swiss keys are worthless if you do not know how to access the clearing accounts,” he replied, his voice dry and distant.
“I have the physical ledger too,” I said, looking down at the heavy leather-bound book on my lap.
“And I have the secondary passphrases Alessandro wrote in his own hand.”
