“Silvio,” Matteo muttered, his voice a low growl. “I knew he was ambitious, but I didn’t think he would turn on his own blood.”

“My father is at the brick yard,” I said, looking at him. “We have to go.”

“It is a trap,” Matteo said, checking the magazine of his pistol and sliding it back into place with a metallic click. “Silvio will have his men there. They are likely watching us right now.”

He walked over to a small iron safe hidden behind a loose painting of a Roman landscape.

He spun the dial quickly, the clicks sharp in the quiet room.

He pulled out a heavy steel USB drive and a black leather notebook.

“What is that?” I asked.

“The Vitale fortune,” Matteo said, slipping the drive into his inner pocket. “The encryption keys to our offshore accounts. Silvio wants these more than he wants the crown.”

He looked at me, his dark eyes reflecting the dim light of the single bulb overhead.

“If Silvio gets these, the family is finished, and so are we,” he said.
