Juliette turned to Dan, her face contorting into an expression of desperate outrage.
“Daniel, are you going to let her do this to me?” she cried.
“She is threatening your mother.”
Dan looked at his mother, then at me, and then down at the keys in my hand.
He looked like a man who had been carrying a heavy weight up a hill for years, and his legs had finally given out.
“You spent Dad’s money, Mom,” Dan said quietly.
“That has nothing to do with this!” she yelled.
“It has everything to do with this,” Dan said.
“You told me you were broke because of the medical bills. But you’ve been renting beach houses and buying designer clothes.”
“I had to maintain our social standing,” Juliette said.
“For who?” Sarah asked from the corner.
“Your friends at the country club who don’t even call you anymore?”
Juliette flinched, her pale cheeks flushing a deep, angry red.
“You know nothing about my life, Sarah,” Juliette muttered.
“I know you took my college fund,” Sarah said.
“And I know you’ve been bleeding Dan dry for years.”
