“Find out what?” I asked, keeping my voice low.
“About the money,” Sarah said, looking down at the floor.
Dan frowned. “What money? Mom has been complaining about her pension for six months. She made me pay for her car service down here.”
Sarah shook her head, a dark look crossing her face.
“That’s because she’s a liar,” Sarah whispered.
Before Dan could answer, Juliette stormed back into the kitchen, her face flushed red with anger.
She held her phone up like a weapon, pointing it directly at my face.
“What did you do?” Juliette hissed, her voice trembling.
“I’m warming up the hot dogs, Juliette,” I said, pointing to the stove.
“Don’t play dumb with me, Annie,” she said, stepping closer. “The catering company says my order was delivered and signed for by someone at this house.”
Dan looked at me, then at his mother. “What catering company?”
“I ordered a real meal for us, Dan,” Juliette said, turning to him. “Because your wife is serving us garbage.”
“Where is my food, Annie?” Juliette demanded, her eyes wide with fury.
