“We are looking at a default by the end of the week.”

Lila let out another sob, sinking back into her leather chair, her face buried in her hands.

The mascara had run down her cheeks in dark, greasy lines.

“You ruined me,” she muttered into her palms.

“You told me we were going to be the biggest developers in Orange County.”

Grant did not look at her.

His eyes were fixed on Caleb.

“We can find another lender,” Grant said, his voice rising in panic.

“We have the assets.”

“What assets?” Diane asked from my side.

“Your firm leveraged its office building in Newport Center to secure the secondary line of credit.”

“If the Maribel falls, the bank takes the building.”

“You will be operating out of a leased trailer by next month, Grant.”

The detective was scrolling through Lila’s phone, his face expressionless.

“Miss Monroe,” Detective Miller said.

“I am going to need you to come down to the station to preserve these files.”

“Am I being arrested?” Lila asked, her voice cracking.

“That depends on your cooperation,” the detective said.
