She grabbed her desk phone and dialed a number.
“Who are you calling?” I asked.
“Arthur’s old firm,” she said. “I need the signed, notarized scan of that addendum from their archive server.”
The phone rang on speaker.
After four rings, a tired voice answered.
“This is Marcus.”
“Marcus, it’s Diane Cho,” she said. “I need a favor, and I need it tonight.”
I watched her face as she spoke, hoping for a breakthrough.
Outside, the rain began to patter against the office window.
The wind rattled the glass.
Diane nodded as Marcus spoke on the other end.
“Yes, the Whitmore file,” she said. “From twelve years ago.”
There was a long pause, filled only with the sound of typing over the line.
“I’m looking at the index now, Diane,” Marcus said.
“Is the signed addendum there?” Diane asked.
“That’s strange,” Marcus said.
His voice sounded puzzled.
“What is it?” Diane asked, leaning closer to the phone.
“The file was accessed earlier today,” Marcus said.
I held my breath.
“By whom?” Diane asked.
“A digital request was made at two o’clock this afternoon,” Marcus said. “The authorization code was entered using Grant Whitmore’s corporate credentials.”
