“We have filed a federal petition to recognize Lily as the sole legal heir of the late Arthur Whitmore’s primary estate.”

“The certified DNA test results are attached.”

“They were processed by a court-appointed laboratory in Boston.”

I looked down at Lily.

She was fast asleep, her tiny fist tucked against her chin.

She had no idea that her name was currently bringing a multi-billion-dollar empire to a complete standstill.

“This is an outrage,” Margaret said, her voice rising as she stood up.

“This board does not recognize this child.”

“The board will have to,” Grace replied, her voice remaining perfectly calm.

“Because if you proceed with the vote to transfer the family assets to Adrian’s new offshore entity, you will all be accessory to federal fraud.”

The board members began to murmur, looking at each other in sudden panic.

The air in the room grew heavy, smelling of expensive cologne, old paper, and stale coffee.

One of them, an older man in a charcoal suit, leaned forward.

“What fraud, Grace?” he asked.

“Adrian and his mother signed affidavits stating there were no surviving direct descendants from his first marriage,” Grace said.
