“He was going to leave me here to face his mother and the lawyers,” Celeste said. “He was going to let me take the fall for the forged trust documents.”
“So you decided to sell him out,” Grace said.
“I want my share,” Celeste said, her voice hardening. “I want two hundred thousand dollars. In cash, or a certified check from an account his mother cannot touch.”
Grace leaned back in the booth, her face expressionless.
“You are an accomplice to bank fraud, Ms. Vale,” Grace said. “We could simply turn this information over to the federal authorities.”
“And Adrian would flee before they even open a file,” Celeste shot back. “You need this drive today. Without it, you will spend ten years fighting Margaret in probate court for a fraction of what Lily deserves.”
She tapped the black drive with her long fingernail.
“This is liquid,” Celeste said. “It is ready to be moved. Adrian is probably at his desk right now trying to wire the remaining ten million.”
I looked down at Lily, who was breathing softly against my shoulder.
