“The Mercer name is officially gone from the hospitality industry.”

I opened the binder.

The pages were clean and white.

They listed the forty-two properties we now owned outright.

The hotels in Miami, London, and Chicago.

They were no longer tied to the debts of a family that had spent decades living on borrowed prestige.

They were mine.

“We need to hire a new chief operating officer,” I said.

“I want someone from outside the old circle.”

“I have three resumes on your desk,” Lena said.

“None of them have ever met a Mercer.”

“Good,” I said.

The door opened, and Sarah entered.

She looked much better than she had on Thursday.

“Nora,” she said.

“Grant’s sister, Elizabeth, is on the line.”

“She wants to know if she can retrieve some personal items from the Greenwich house.”

“Tell her the house belongs to the Greenwich Historical Trust,” I said.

“Any items left inside are now public property.”

“She will have to contact Mr. Vance.”

Sarah nodded and closed the door.

I turned back to the window.
