I looked at Detective Pierce, who began moving toward the front of the courtroom.

“The state police have already issued warrants for the arrest of Vanessa Caldwell and Dr. Harrison on charges of first-degree murder, conspiracy, and child abuse,” I said.

Sterling looked down at his desk, his shoulders sagging as he realized there was no defense left to mount.

“Your Honor, in light of this evidence, we ask for the immediate and permanent termination of Vanessa Caldwell’s parental rights,” I said.

“We also ask for temporary sole custody to be granted to Benjamin Caldwell, under the supervision of the court.”

Judge Vance looked down at Vanessa, her expression hard and unyielding.

“The court finds the evidence presented by the petitioner to be overwhelming and deeply disturbing,” the judge said.

“Mrs. Caldwell, you will remain in custody pending your criminal arraignment.”

“The minor children will be placed under the temporary sole custody of their father, Benjamin Caldwell, effective immediately.”

“This court session is adjourned.”

The gavel struck the wooden block with a sharp, final crack.
