The Cold Legacy of the Family He Sacrificed Everything to Protect
We stood on the porch in silence, the cold air settling deep into our bones.
I looked at Benjamin, who was staring down at the papers in his hand.
“I have to sign it,” he said.
“No,” I said, grabbing his arm. “If you sign that, she wins everything. She controls the board, the assets, and she will still find a way to take them later.”
“I can’t let them take Sophie,” Benjamin said, his eyes welling with tears. “I can’t let them take any of them.”
“We have twelve hours,” I said. “We can find a judge to stay the order.”
“In this storm?” Benjamin asked, gesturing to the heavy snow blocking the driveway. “The mountain passes are already closed.”
We walked back inside, shutting the heavy oak door against the cold.
Dr. Amelia Hart was standing in the hallway, her arms wrapped around Lily.
Sophie sat on the bottom step of the staircase, her knees pulled to her chest.
She was watching us with wide, dark eyes.
She looked so much like Claire it made my chest ache.
