“Filed by a firm in Denver representing Vanessa.”

“On what grounds?” Pierce asked, turning around.

“She’s currently fleeing the scene of an explosion.”

“She is challenging Benjamin’s fitness as a parent,” I said, reading the text.

“She has submitted medical records from the girls’ previous visits.”

“She claims Benjamin’s neglect caused their injuries.”

“That’s a lie,” Benjamin shouted, his voice cracking with emotion.

“She was the one who hurt them!”

“We know that, Benjamin,” I said, trying to calm him.

“But on paper, she has a loophole.”

I scrolled down to the bottom of the petition, my eyes freezing on the clause.

“During the adoption process for the younger girls, the final signatures were never fully processed by the state.”

“Because of the corporate restructuring last year, the paperwork was put on hold.”

“Vanessa’s name is on the primary biological registry for Sophie and Grace.”

“She is listed as their sole legal guardian in the event of a custody dispute.”

Benjamin stared at me, his eyes wide with horror.

“That can’t be true,” he whispered.

“I signed those papers myself.”
