“I am calling Dr. Hart,” I said.

Benjamin looked up at me, his eyes dark with a cold, terrifying rage.

“Call Marcus, too,” he said, his voice dropping to a dangerous whisper.

He stood up slowly, tucking Grace into his coat.

“Tell Marcus to lock down every exit of this house.”

He turned back toward the hallway, where the bass from the party was still vibrating the floorboards.

His hand slid into his pocket, and when he pulled it out, a small silver device glinted in the dim light.

It was a digital recorder.

“Let’s go find my wife,” Benjamin said.

Just then, the screen of my phone lit up with an incoming call from an unknown number.

I swiped the screen and put the phone to my ear.

“Elena, it’s Daniel Pierce,” the voice said over the static of the bad reception.

“We are just turning onto the main drive with Dr. Hart.”

“The gates are closed, Daniel,” I said, my voice shaking in the freezing room.

“I will have Marcus open them for you immediately.”

I hung up and turned to Benjamin, who was still holding his daughters.
