“It has the names of the port officials, the shippers, the distributors.”
“The whole network.”
“What are you going to do with it?” I asked.
He looked down at his shoes, then back at me.
“I’m going to make sure they can never come after you or Luca again,” he said.
“How?” I asked.
“I’m meeting someone,” Giovanni said.
“A federal prosecutor.”
He took a step backward into the hallway.
“Wait,” I said, letting go of Luca’s hand for a moment.
I walked to the doorway.
“Is it safe?” I asked.
“No,” Giovanni said.
“But it is the only way.”
He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small silver key.
He pressed it into my hand.
“This is for the lockbox at the bank on Tremont Street,” he said.
“Everything you need is in there.”
“New names. New papers.”
“If I don’t come back.”
“Giovanni,” I said, my voice cracking.
“Take care of our son, Lauren,” he said.
He turned and walked down the quiet hallway toward the exit.
I watched him go until he disappeared around the corner.
