“I have worked for the Whitmore family for thirty years,” Mr. Hayes said quietly.

“I have done things I am not proud of.”

“But what Richard did to you, and to this child… it went too far.”

He took another step closer, lowering his voice to a whisper.

“This is for the private vault at the estate,” he said, holding the card out.

“The one in the basement, behind the wine cellar.”

I looked at the black card, my heart racing.

“What is in there?” I asked.

“The real records,” Mr. Hayes said.

“The offshore accounts, the transaction receipts for the private investigators he hired to track you.”

“And the trust documents Richard altered to strip Lily of her birthright.”

“If Nathan’s audit goes through, Richard will try to destroy those files.”

“You must get to them first.”

I reached out and took the cold plastic card from his hand.

It slipped easily into the pocket of my coat.

“Why are you giving this to me?” I asked, looking up into his tired eyes.

“Because Lily deserves her name,” he said simply.
